Palomino: A breed of horse with body color in golden tones and accentuated with a white tail and mane.

pastern: The section between the hoof and the fetlock.

pommel pad: The protective layer of cloth that goes under the saddle.

piebald: A pinto horse's black-and-white coloration.

points: Coloration on a horse's mane, tail and legs.

poll: Located between a horse's ears.

pony: Smaller horse that is more barrel-chested and usually more surefooted.

rhinopneumonitis: A herpes virus that causes respiratory issues in horses.

sire: A male horse who has fathered offspring.

shying: The reaction a horse makes to a sudden noise. May include jumping or bolting.

stallion: A male horse older than 5 years and often considered to be of good breeding quality.

Standardbred: A horse bred and trained specifically for harness racing.

stockings: The markings on a horse's legs just above the cannons.

swamp fever: Also known as equine infectious anemia (EIA), a virus spread through insect transmissions, during the birth process and with the improper use of needles.

swayback: A noted dip in a horse's spine that is often due to old age.
